The character of Cleopatra Essay Example

The character of Cleopatra Essay Example The character of Cleopatra Paper The character of Cleopatra Paper How Cleopatra acts when Antony is away reveals a lot about her character and how she feels about herself and Antony. The scene starts off with Cleopatra asking Charmian for a narcotic so that she can sleep out this great gap of time that her Antony is away. She is thinking about Antonys every move Stands he, or sits he? and speaks jealously of the horse that he may be sitting on. Horse back riding is associated with sexual intercourse, and she speaks of how the horse should be proud to hold Antony. She talks of how the horse would not know who it is taking, that Antony is the demi-atlas of the world meaning he holds half the world, and is the ultimate soldier equipped only with his arm and a light helmet. She then starts talking about herself and Antony, she is very complimenting to herself, but explains that she is feeding herself most delicious poison when she has the thought that Antony is thinking of her. She carries on to say this self-flattery is, although nice, not good. She talks vividly of how she feels love pinches and bruises, showing her violent side but also an erotic side. She then starts to be hard on herself, asking why Antony would ever think of her, she calls her self black, which is unattractive to the Romans. This is confirmed before hand where Philo describes her as tawny referring to the colours of gypsies and gypsy ways (magic and witchcraft). However to console herself almost, she speaks of her former lovers, Caesar and Pompey and how they saw her and treated her. These sudden changes in the subjects she chooses to speak about shows her ever-changing personality. First she speaks of how Antony must be thinking about her, then that he isnt, then how he must see her in a bad way, and then how her former lovers adored her. Shes a very confusing character, who even Antony will probably never figure out. Alexas interrupts here, a messenger from Antony, to present an orient pearl to Cleopatra. Cleopatra seems happy with Alexas message from Antony but continues to question him about Antony. What, was he sad, or merry? Alexas explains to Cleopatra that he was neither sad nor merry. Cleopatras response to this is interesting as she justifies this information in favour of herself and Antony. She says that he cannot be sad as people look up to him, but he also cannot be merry as it shows people he wants to be in Egypt. He shall have every day a several greeting, Or Ill unpeople Egypt, this extravagant, expression is her response to Alexas when he questions why she sends so many messengers, (twenty several messengers per day). It means that she loves Antony beyond all other concerns. Cleopatras language is serious yet exaggerating, it could be seen in a preposterous way, for example Or Ill be damned. However it is still a very violent expression, revealing Cleopatras unethical ways of dealing with certain situations. Her violent response to Alexas would scare most men off a woman, but not Cleopatra, she is explained by Enobarbus that she makes hungry where she most satisfies later on in the play.

Course Project Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Course Project - Case Study Example While trying to identify the reasons associated with the success of the strategies for Apple IPod, focus has to be given on a number of issues. The first reason that needs to be highlighted is that the company Apple provides a lot of focus on introducing innovation in its products (Travlos, 2013). Secondly, the company prefers to promote simplicity in its product offerings. By having a highly simplistic kind of a user interface for the IPod, the company was able to create a favourable point of difference for its music product (Bajarin, 2012). The third factor is that the IPod was launched in the market along with a bundled free service offering. The free service offering which is popularly known as iTunes, helped in a great way in enhancing the customer experience for the product (LePage, 2006). The fourth factor that administered success to the IPod is the unique way of product marketing and branding by Apple. Since marketing is all about generating interest in the minds of the cons umers, the marketing approach of Apple was more focused on generating the buzz for the new product offering of the company at the time of launch. Also, the company focused on positioning the product as a fashion accessory, thereby triggering a further demand for the product (Weisbein, 2008). Finally, the last reason for success of the Apple IPod is the ability of the company to create a captive audience. By designing the highly fashionable lifestyle natured music device in a way, that it will accept only inputs from the company’s music website, helped in a great way in creating a captive audience, which automatically generated a huge amount of revenue for the company (Schulhof, 2006, p. 2). Mini Case 2: Failure The second mini case focuses on discussing the reasons leading to failure for a strategy of a particular company. For the purpose of relevance, the company that has been selected is Nokia, which is a globally present mobile manufacturing and marketing company. Talking more about the company, it needs special highlighting that Nokia in the last couple of years, has lost its market dominance position to various other competitors like Apple, Samsung, etc. On conducting an in-depth analysis, various points of flaws have been revealed. The first factor that has to be considered is that the telecom company lost its product related edge in the market. While its competitors focused on strongly promoting products which are high on innovative features, the company took a laid back approach (ET Bureau, 2013). Secondly, the company failed in a great way to identify the changing and rapidly evolving global mobile market. While the market was to Smartphones with touch features developed by its competitors, Nokia stuck for a considerable amount of time to with promoting Smartphones that lacked uniqueness in its product offering (News, 2012). Thirdly, the factor of brand positioning has to be taken into consideration. The bulky phone presented by Nokia lost its edge in the market when competing with other popular brands which are high on style and product appeal. Over a period of time, due to loss of brand appeal, Nokia’s products looked very old fashioned as compared to the rival’s homogenous and alternative product offerings (Chang, 2012). Cultural Anthropology Essay Example for Free

Cultural Anthropology Essay 1. How does a cultures physical environment shape the type of subsistence pattern they practice? How does subsistence impact a cultures degree of social stratification? How is the degree of social stratification mirrored in religious systems? The amount of sunlight and rainfall and the types of soil, forests, and mineral deposits all have an effect on the type of subsistence pattern a particular society develops. For example, In the U.S society people have different choices to obtain their food such as obtain their food from a fast-food restaurant or obtain their food for cooking from a grocery store or supermarket; other societies have different ways to obtain their food supplies. Which lead us to different type of life practices to get food such as people who live close to sea do fishing practices and people who live near to a desert obtain their food by hunting. The specific biome and environmental conditions may limit the development of certain types of subsistence patterns. For example, Arctic conditions are not conducive to agricultural activities, nor are arid regions suitable for rice production. In some societies of wealth, power and prestige are linked with ownership of land or the number of animals acquired. 2. Describe economic exchange among band societies and it purpose. How does this type of exchange change with different societal types and why? The major form of economic system with band societies is called reciprocal economic system; the system is based on exchanges among family groups as a means of distributing goods and services throughout the society. One of the main reasons for this system of reciprocal exchange is that food and other resources must usually be consumed immediately. There are three types of reciprocity: generalized, balanced, and negative. The most used one among societies is called generalized reciprocity (Own Group), an immediate return is not expected and that the value of the exchanges will balance out in the long run. For example, in our society parents take care of their kids, so you take care of them in their old age. Another one is balanced reciprocity (Other Groups); this type is more direct with immediate return. For example, in our society change money for someone, such as change a dollar for someone to four quarter to use the snick machine. The last one Negative Reciprocity (Rare), it is the attempt to get something out of nothing. For example, in our societies people who go to the car dealer try to take the car for the cheapest price they can and the dealer try to take more money from the buyer. Both of them are negative reciprocity which means try to get something out of nothing. They do them because it makes the life for them easier and without the sharing between them life would be barder and less pleasant. The greater predictability and concentration of resources within a particular region, the more pronounced the conceptions of private ownership and exclusive rights to territory among foragers in comparison to territorial rights among different hunter-gathers. 3.What are some ways in which the higher degree of mobility affects the technologies, subsistence behaviors, and social organization of pastoralists versus horticulturalists? Higher degree of mobility affects the group to maintain a certain number of people in the group to keep it effective to move to another place. To do so, they use this mean called, Fissioning, moving of people from one group to another. Another means of population control is infanticide, the deliberate abandonment or killing of infants, and geronticide, the killing of old people. Higher degree of mobility also affect the technologies. In this case, technology does not refer to just tools or artifacts, but it also includes the cultural knowledge that has to be maintained by the society. All foraging peoples have an extensive knowledge of their environmental conditions and of the appropriciate means of solving technological problems in these environments. Different from horticulturalists, foragers need to know where to find the plants, when to find them during different seasons, which plants are edible, and so on since they need to move during different seasons to pursue game and other resources. Inuit created an extremely complex foraging technology. Because of the weather conditions and the environment, they developed sophisticated techniques for curing hides from caribou and seals to make boots, parkas, and snow goggles. 4. Marriage is a human universal. In what forms does marriage exist and why? What is the function of endogamy and exogamy? How do forms of marriage exchange vary and how does each function to serve society? Marriage provide a systemic form of social mobility for the entire society. Endogamy is a type of marriage between people of the same social group or category. Endogamous marriages are carefully arranged so as to maintain genealogically appropriate kinship bonds and descent relations in the top-ranking descent group. Exogamy is a type of marriage between people of different social group or categories. Having this type of marriage gives significant benefit to the one side of kinship, which does not have as power as the another kinship, because they can share the power once one get married. Most agricultural states practiced some form of marital exchange. The most common type of exchange was dowry- goods and wealth paid by the bride’s family to the groom’s family. Dowry appears to be to the groom’s family exchanges wealth for the bride. The dowry was used as a social exchange between families to arrange a marriage contract.
